Cavaliers Close-Up: DeAndre Ayton

We are extremely excited to announce a new section in our blog, Cavaliers Close-Up, where we will feature scouting reports on young, up and coming Freshman, sturdy and reliable Seniors, and all of the NBA Draft Prospects in between.  Even though the 2017 NBA Draft just occurred, it is an exciting time to start watching the new cream of the crop in college basketball.  Presumably, the Cleveland Cavaliers will have a late first round pick in the 2018 NBA Draft so we can start to take a look at some of the top players that will be available in 2018!  Our first Cavaliers Close-Up is...

DeAndre Ayton, Center
21.1 PPG, 16.0 RPG, 3.8 BPG (2014-2015 Sophomore Stats According to MaxPreps.com)
Hillcrest Prep Academy
Will Play at the University of Arizona (Also had offers from San Diego State University, Kansas, Kentucky. and Maryland)
Measurables" 7'0, 220 Pounds

DeAndre Ayton was originally born in the Bahamas, but moved to San Diego, California at a young age with his parents and four siblings.  Attended Hillcrest Prep Academy where he was a 2017 McDonald's All-American and participated in the 2017 Jordan Brand Classic.  Ayton is the number two overall rated player in the ESPN Recruiting Nation Top 100.

DeAndre Ayton is certainly one of the most fun prospects to watch in the 2018 draft class as he moves well for a guy his size.  He can easily stride up and down the court and finish with ease on fast breaks.  Good defender, but not great.  Showed quick hands and capable of getting quick steals when guarding deep in the post.  Great shooter for a 7 footer.  Can hit from mid-range and beyond.  Athleticism helps him grab offensive rebounds, finish on fast breaks, and finish at the rim, but didn't see much of a post game from him.  Average passer for a guy his size.  Going to be exciting to watch him play next year at the University of Arizona as Head Coach Sean Miller should help mold him into a top NBA Draft Prospect and will likely use him in a similar role as he did this past season with the 8th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft Lauri Markkenen.  A good pro comparison for Ayton would be Myles Turner, PF/C for Indiana Pacers.  A lot of similarities including being able to hit outside shots, but offensive post game needs to be strengthen.
